Community eager to get a taste of Bridgeville library fundraiser
There's a waiting list for tickets to this year's Taste of the Town, a fundraiser to benefit Bridgeville Public Library.
In a little more than a month, the library staff knew it had struck gold again with its Taste of the Town idea. In that time, ticket sales were steady. Fifty dollars wasn't too much to spend for an evening of dining and dancing – all for a good cause.
This year's event is planned for April 26 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department Chartiers Room, 370 Commercial St. Additional friends and neighbors of the library are invited to put their names on the list because all 175 tickets have been sold.
“I'm flabbergasted,” said Joyce Heinrich, the library's event planner and fundraiser. “I hope we can live up to last year. How do we make it even better?”
The event brought in $10,000, the most money raised except for the annual letter-writing campaign, she said.
Heinrich had discovered the idea during a trip to St. Louis six or seven years ago. In Missouri, 400 to 500 people had crowded into a gym, enjoying food that appealed to everybody.
In Bridgeville, 12 restaurateurs participated in 2013, and 12 are scheduled this time.
New to the roster are Shouf's Cafe, Little Oasis, Roadside Ribs BBQ, Pin High Club in Hickory Heights, Serafina's and Walnut Grove, all Bridgeville eateries. Event sponsors are PNC, Northwest Savings Bank, FedEx and T.J. Maxx.
“Everyone contacted graciously accepted,” Heinrich said.
Rabih Fahed, 29, is owner of Shouf's Cafe, a Lebanese restaurant. He'll offer traditional ethnic items, such as salad dressed with lemon, oil, garlic and mint and topped with feta; hummus; and pita bread.
“These will feed a lot of people,” he said, happy to support a local cause. “If anybody ever needs anything ….”
Now a Green Tree resident, he has been in business for eight years.
“I love Bridgeville,” he said. “It's a great community. You can get whatever you need here.”
It is that kind of sentiment that brings residents out to support the library, including the 30 people who helped to organize this event.
Heinrich calls Jim Wisbon her right-hand man and credits Jane Irwin for her efforts gathering items for the Chinese auction. Portman Farms, Batter and Dough Baking Co. and the Sweet Shoppe will contribute desserts and candy.
“I hope it's as much fun this year as last year,” Heinrich said. “People danced to the music of Savoy Truffle for two to three hours.”
