Parkview resident picked to fill seat on O’Hara Council

Parkview resident Scott Frankowski has made a career in government after working in the past decade for state Sen. Jim Ferlo (D-38) and most recently for state Sen. Randy Vulakovich (R-40).
It's a natural extension for him to serve the people of O'Hara first-hand, said Frankowski, a Republican newly appointed to council to fill a vacancy created when longtime councilman Brian Kozera resigned in October due to personal reasons.
Frankowski, 49, was chosen from among seven candidates to serve a 14-month term representing the Third Ward.
“There were six other excellent candidates,” said Frankowski, a Fox Chapel Area alum who has lived in O'Hara most of his life. “I'm honored they selected me.”
Frankowski was recruited to run by the township's Republican committee, he said.
He said his work experience in city, county and state government will provide residents with a strong line of communications to outside agencies.
Council President Bob Smith said members were faced with a good problem in that “there were excellent candidates.”
“We were real lucky,” he said. “They were all good.”
Frankowski's overall experience in government clinched Smith's vote.
A constituent service specialist for Vulakovich's Bakerstown office, Frankowski said he considered a run for public office in the past but a tight schedule never allowed it, although he had dedicated a slew of volunteer hours through his time on the civil service commission and the Men's Club at St. Joseph Parish.
Frankowski will serve out the remainder of Kozera's position, which expires in Dec. 2013. He can choose to make a bid for a full four-year term at that time.
As Frankowski joins council this month, at a time when members are crunching numbers to reconcile the township's 2013 budget, he said, he plans to take time to learn the issues facing residents.
“I know there are some storm water issues with Ravine Street, and I want to try to keep improving Sacco Park,” he said. “We promised people a walking trail up there.”
Frankowski isn't totally unfamiliar with council; his father served the township in the same capacity about two decades ago.
“I think he'd be proud,” Frankowski said.
