Work forcing the closure of a portion of Route 910 is detouring traffic through several Indiana Township neighborhoods.

And the added traffic worries some residents.

In an effort to keep residents safe, police will keep eyes peeled for drivers who aren't following regulations such as speed limits and stop signs, township police chief Robert Wilson said.

Wilson, who just marked 30 years with the municipal police force last week, said safety on residential roads will be of prime importance to his officers.

The road closure is part of a project to widen part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

The Route 910 bridge north of Emmerling Plaza closed on Feb. 4.

The bridge will be made longer to pass over the wider Turnpike lanes it crosses.

Construction is scheduled to last until Oct. 4.

The posted 12-mile detour leads cars traveling north left onto Locust Hill, right on Guys Run, bearing right on Fox Chapel, left to Dorseyville, right to Harts Run, and right to Saxonburg Boulevard to intersect with Route 910.

The detour for trucks is to take Route 8 to Saxonburg Boulevard.

While the posted detour avoids the smaller, community roads, motorists sometimes cut through communities to avoid traffic.

Wilson said police will enforce the weight limits posted almost a month ago on community roads such as Blue Run.

However, he said, it is not legal to keep cars off township roads even though the local roads are not part of the recommended detour.

Some supervisors said the increase in traffic is from area residents who know short cuts through the township.

However, they said, GPS systems can delineate routes off major arteries through residential streets, as well.

They warned all drivers to follow posted speed limits and stop signs as township police will be on the lookout for violators.
