Habitat for Humanity eyes projects in Aspinwall
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh wants to help people in Aspinwall.
Habitat officials plan to pitch the organization's “A Brush with Kindness” and weatherization programs to borough residents.
The programs involve smaller household projects.
Residents partner with the organization to complete the work.
Funding for the projects comes from the Fox Chapel Area School District's annual telethon. Last year, about $35,000 was raised for Habitat for Humanity, Nicole Zeak, community outreach and faith relations for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh, said.
“They've asked that we keep those funds in the Fox Chapel (Area) School District,” Zeak said.
The organization has done work in Sharpsburg in the past. In observance of National Day of Service, Habitat for Humanity worked to restore a house in Sharpsburg on Sept. 11.
Zeak said Habitat representatives plan to reach out to the other communities in the Fox Chapel district.
“We do plan on doing the same thing in every borough in the area,” Zeak said.
The first step for the group will be to leave information about the programs with residents.
“We would not be soliciting any personal information at the time of that meeting, we would just be handing out a general flyer,” Zeak said.
Zeak said the organization would like to use the borough building as a site for an informational session where people could begin the application process for the programs.
Aspinwall officials said that would be OK as long as the building wasn't already reserved.
Zeak also said Habitat officials are working with local churches to connect to the community.
Aspinwall Council President Mark Ellermeyer said keeping the money raised within the Fox Chapel Area School District was a good request by the district and he thanked Habitat for Humanity for speaking with borough officials.
“I think this is a worthy endeavor,” Ellermeyer said.
