Traveling all over the United States has become second nature to Jeannette Fire Chief Joe Matijevic.

Matijevic is the proud father of son J.J., 17, and daughter Jenna, 15.

J.J. is an accomplished baseball player and he travels all over the United States with his father and sister while competing with his national traveling team.

The family, in the past few years, has traveled to California, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Indiana, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Ohio, West Virginia and Delaware.

J.J. also plays for Norwin High School and this fall will be signing his letter of intent to attend Arizona University on a baseball scholarship.

J.J. will also compete in invitational tournaments this summer in Akron and Allentown, which will be scouted by the pros.

“We have sacrificed a lot for J.J. to do this,” said Matijevic. “Jenna, his sister, has sacrificed, too, but she has made friends with the sisters of other players and is getting to visit a lot of colleges.”

Jenna attends Norwin High School where she is a member of the National Junior Honor Society.

“She is very smart and gets real good grades. She is already getting stuff from colleges.”

In the past, Jenna played various sports, but now she is concentrating on her studies.

In addition to being involved with his children, Matijevic has been a member of the Jeannette Fire Department since 1996.

He was promoted to captain in 2003 and then promoted to chief in 2011. Being a firefighter is a tradition in his family.

“My dad was a Grapeville Fireman and I credit him with getting me into this,” said Matijevic. “He took us around; it (Grapeville Fire Hall) was our second home.”

Although he enjoys his job as a firefighter, Matijevic has also realized another lifelong dream, to be a disc jockey. Recently, he formed a disc jcokey service called Roof on Fire Entertainment.

Matijevic's grandfather, Wayne Rogan was a DJ and Matijevic said, “He used to do doo-wop dances at Grapeville Fire Hall. That's probably where I got it from. I have a passion for music.”

Roof on Fire Entertainment can be found alternating Fridays at either Franko's or Penn Rod and Gun Club. Matijevic also plays at the Washington Furnace Inn near Laughlintown, Grapeville Station and R-Pub in Harrison City.

He is also available for weddings, graduations and other parties or celebrations. Matijevic can be reached at 724-708-9127.

With traveling, working as fire chief and being a DJ, it would seem that Matijevic is busy enough, but he also works part-time for Jeannette Distributing.

He helps out in the store and sometimes makes deliveries.
