Day of Giving benefits Ligonier nonprofit groups
Despite bringing in about $80,000 less than last year's event, the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County Day of Giving still generated funds for Ligonier Valley nonprofit agencies.
The 24-hour fundraising event held in May raised a total of $362,084 in public donations and $49,997 in matching funds for Westmoreland County nonprofit agencies. The foundation's last fundraising day was held in October and raised $484,000 in public donations and $95,000 in matching funds.
Foundation Executive Director James Bendel said the event was moved to match up with the National Day of Giving in May, which resulted in some donors who donated in October not being prepared to contribute.
“There was a natural fall-off in the amount of money that came to agencies,” he said.
• Ligonier Camp and Conference Center received donations totaling $13,390. The money will help cover operational costs.
• Ligonier Valley Fire Companies raised $2,059, which will be split evenly among Ligonier, Waterford, Wilpen and Darlington fire companies, according to treasurer Phil Fleming.
• Ligonier Valley Historical Society will use its $1,597 in donations for general operating costs and the educational programs it sponsors at the Compass Inn Museum.
• Ligonier Valley Learning Center's $55 will fund its mental health awareness program for children, according to the agency's director, Rebecca Faulk.
• Ligonier Valley Library Association will add books to its collection and cover general operating costs using its $2,381 in donations, said Director Janet Hudson.
• Ligonier Valley Rail Road will put $1,307 towards general maintenance of the museum, said the association's president Bill Potthoff.
• Ligonier Valley Writers will use $528 in donations to cover production costs for “The Loyalhanna Review.
•The Ligonier Valley YMCA raised $1,730. The funds will help the YMCA assist those who need the its services but cannot afford them, such as childcare, according to Larry Stormer the YMCA's chief executive officer.
• Loyalhanna Watershed will put its $2,409 in donations towards its environmental education programs, according to its executive director Susan Huba.
• New Florence Community Library raised $3,344, which will help fund general operations, book purchases and educational programs, according to librarian Peggy Betz.
• Powdermill Nature Reserve received $2,732. A representative from the reserve could not be reached for comment.
• The Valley School of Ligonier raised $2,426, which will go towards its annual fund campaign, according to Director of Development Mallory Reese.
• Fort Ligonier Association raised $1,062. Executive Director Annie Urban said the funds, combined with its annual fund drive proceeds, will benefit the support Fort Ligonier's educational programs and general operating costs.
