Security measures have West Mifflin Area buzzing

Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, 4:31 a.m.

West Mifflin Area High School football fans still are talking about the security during the homecoming game Friday night at Titan Stadium.

“I felt like I was running a (Transportation Security Administration) gauntlet just to see a high school football game,” one fan wrote on the Topix discussion board.

But district officials aren't talking about why security was beefed up in advance of the game against the Elizabeth Forward Warriors, a contest won by the host Titans, 27-0.

Additional West Mifflin police were on hand, according to eyewitnesses.

“(They) wanded you as you entered,” according to a text sent to The Daily News from one witness. “Never saw that done at West Mifflin before. Checked your bags too.”

Borough officials could not be reached for comment at presstime.

There were rumors prior to the game about someone bringing a gun to the stadium, which could not be confirmed.

The idea of screening ticket holders as they enter a sports stadium isn't unique. Steel Valley is using hand-held metal-detecting wands on fans attending games at William V. Campbell “A” Field in Munhall.

Students and other visitors face metal detectors as they enter many of the school buildings across the Mon-Yough region, including the West Mifflin Area district.

“The safety and security in the West Mifflin Area School District is our number one priority,” district officials state on West Mifflin Area's website. “In creating a safe and secure environment, our students, staff and parents are at ease and focused on education.”

The beefed-up security coincided with an announcement by Allegheny County police that a warrant had been issued for a suspect in a killing in neighboring Duquesne.

County police said Monday the search is continuing for Dewayne “Piggy” Gray, 20, in connection with the Aug. 12 murder of Charles Davis, 18, of North Versailles Township.

County police said Gray is known to frequent West Mifflin.

Homicide detective Lt. Andrew Schurman said he had no word about Gray being at that football game and the beefed-up security was not related to the search for Gray.
