A Pitcairn man involved in a police standoff early Monday morning was awaiting a competency hearing as of Tuesday to determine if charges can be filed, Allegheny County Police Inspector David Walsh said.

If the man is deemed mentally unstable, he'll undergo an additional evaluation period of 30 to 60 days, Walsh said.

The Allegheny County SWAT team was called to his home on Ninth Street after he threatened to harm himself and local police, Walsh said.

There were two other people in the house when police arrived, but neither was harmed, he said.

Police were able to talk the man out of his home, at which point they used a stun gun and nonlethal beanbag ammunition to subdue him.
