Pitcairn to record, broadcast meetings

Pitcairn Council voted last week to record and replay council meetings for residents who are unable to attend.

A self-operated camera will be placed in council chambers, and officials plan to air the footage multiple times on cable Channel 4 in Pitcairn, after each meeting, said Council President John Prucnal.

It's likely the Oct. 23 voting meeting will be the first to be televised, Prucnal said. Council meetings are held the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m.

Crime prevention

The borough will spend $4,000 to buy two surveillance cameras to deter crime in Pitcairn, officials said.

The Allegheny County District Attorney's office is contributing about $2,500 for the cameras and the borough will contribute the rest, Pitcairn Councilman John Bova said. The cameras will be located at the police chief's discretion, and are “easily moved,” Bova said.

Meanwhile, the number of crimes reported in Pitcairn decreased from July to August, and Mayor John McCreary said that is a result of Barry's Bar closing and the court-ordered closure of the Young Hotel. Both buildings are on Broadway Boulevard.

A judge ordered the Young Hotel to close because of safety violations. The hotel generated 160 calls to police in 2011, borough officials said. Both establishments were the subject of a drug investigation by the federal Drug Enforcement Agency earlier this year.

Fire safety

Landlords in Pitcairn will need a fire-safety rental license for each of their units, as required by a municipal ordinance approved by council last week.

“We've had a number of fires in Pitcairn,” Pitcairn Solicitor Craig Alexander said. “I think (the ordinance) really adds to the safety of the community.

Inspectors can report other building violations while inspecting for fire safety, Alexander said.

It will cost landlords $55 per unit for the first inspection and $35 for additional inspections, which are required every two years, or when a new tenant moves in, Alexander said.

Detour

Repairs to the Agatha Street Bridge are expected to begin by mid-October, Pitcairn engineer Don Black said. A detour will be established for school buses and cars traveling to and from Propel Pitcairn on Agatha Street.

The borough received about $185,000 of emergency grant funding from Allegheny County to go with $75,000 Pitcairn officials expect the borough to contribute, said Pitcairn Manager Malisa Migliori. Most of the work will have to be completed by Dec. 31, she said.
