Export seeks payment for lot
Export officials are hoping to turn an influx of bus riders in the community into a profit.
Since the completion of the Turtle Creek flood-control project last year, commuters regularly are using the borough parking lot as a park-and-ride lot for Westmoreland County Transit Authority. And Export officials want to negotiate a payment from the authority to keep that park-and-ride alive.
“It's great to see that program blossom and succeed,” Mayor Michael Calder said. “But fair is fair. We do need to negotiate a fair price for that use.”
The borough repaved the lot as part of the flood-control project, and it is now used “extensively” by bus riders, Calder said. Ridership on the 2F route, which shuttles Export, Delmont and Murrysville riders to Downtown Pittsburgh, increased by 35 percent in 2012, authority officials said in the fall.
The borough used to receive a monthly payment of about $600 from the transit authority for use of the lot, Councilman John Nagoda said. The lot is advertised as a park-and-ride for the authority and features a bus shelter, he said.
Officials weren't sure when the authority stopped paying for use of the lot, Nagoda said.
“Maybe we can make it exclusively their parking,” Nagoda said. “I think it's a good idea.”
Officials at the Westmoreland County Transit Authority did not respond to requests for comment.
