Allegheny Health Network to open new facility in Monroeville
A new medical facility in Monroeville will make outpatient procedures more convenient for people in the east suburbs, Allegheny Health Network officials said Thursday.
The ambulatory surgery center — which is on Monroeville Boulevard, behind the Miracle Mile Shopping Center — will open Oct. 14. It features four operating rooms, each 600 square feet, that will be used for general procedures such as orthopedic or ear, nose and throat procedures. It also has three rooms, each 400 square feet, for intestinal procedures.
“It allows physicians to come out to the community and perform procedures right in (patients') back yard,” AHN Vice President Bonnie Irvin said.
Irvin said the facility will help decongest operating rooms at other AHN hospitals in the area.
“We are working hand in glove with (Allegheny General Hospital), Forbes and West Penn.”
Highmark officials approached municipal officials with site plans for the facility while negotiations to merge Highmark and West Penn Allegheny Health System were ongoing.
Monroeville Council unanimously approved the site plans in January. The merger to form the Allegheny Health Network was finalized in April.
The surgery center has 10 preoperative patient bays and 14 postoperative patient bays, which were designed to ease the flow of patients in and out of the building and maintain patient privacy, said Marcee Radakobich, director of the ambulatory center.
AHN officials said they expect the facility to handle about 50 patients per day.
The center, which is within a mile of Forbes Regional Hospital, is one of several Highmark facilities planned to open in the region, including a medical mall in Wexford that will feature an outpatient surgery center and mix of medical offices and retail outlets.
A Highmark Direct store is located in the Miracle Mile Shopping Center, and a road connects the shopping center with the Corporate One Office Park.
Next door to the planned medical facility in Monroeville is the Corporate One Office Park, where UPMC operates a Children‘s Express Care practice, a UPMC Behavioral Health office and a Magee Womancare Associates imaging center. Less than a mile away is UPMC East.
