Getting together to show their athletic abilities or at least their good sportsmanship, about 30 faculty members from the Uniontown Area School District will face off against teachers from the Brownsville Area School District in a basketball game to raise funds for a local nonprofit.

The proceeds from the game will go to Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania, which is thrilled to have been selected as the recipient of the proceeds.

Event organizer Josh Scully, a teacher in the Uniontown school district, said that they have held similar events in the past that were always well-received

“We have had faculty games in the past to raise money and the games were always well-attended,” Scully said. “In the past we, the Uniontown teachers, have played the Uniontown firemen, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Laurel Highlands faculty and the Turkeyfoot faculty. Whenever you get large numbers of people committed toward a common cause, great things can happen.”

“I can't begin to tell you what a great job they have done in community outreach,” said Community Education specialist Jennifer Soisson of Domestic Violence Services of the many items that Scully and his committee already have collected that will be a part of the large Chinese auction that will also be a part of the event. “They are doing an outstanding job.”

Soisson added that she is pleased the group recognized her organization and its importance to everyone.

“It makes me very happy to see people in our community not ignore domestic violence,” Soisson said. “I hope that some of the students will now be more aware of it, and this event could help to send a message to them.”

The event will feature one full game that will be played by teams composed of both male and female teachers from the districts.

Scully said that they chose Domestic Violence Services for several reasons, with one of the main focuses being the location of the services.

“I wanted to seek out a charity that covered a somewhat larger geographic area that many people should be familiar with in terms of name recognition at least,” Scully said. “The Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern Pennsylvania certainly serve a need and that organization is as good a cause as any.”

The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Uniontown Area High School.

Advance ticket prices are $3 for adults and $1 for students or children. Adult tickets will be $4 at the door. Tickets are being sold at Brownsville Area Senior High School, Uniontown Area Senior High School and A.J. McMullen Middle School.
