Two men were arrested Tuesday while trying to steal scrap metal from the shuttered Patterson Supply building in Monongahela, police said.

City officers captured the men – allegedly in the act – before the suspects could get to their getaway bicycles.

Brad A. Behanna, 27, of 866 Route 481, Carroll Township, and William Arthur Leasure, 35, of 177 First Ave., New Eagle, each were charged with burglary, criminal conspiracy, criminal trespass, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, criminal attempt and criminal trespass.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed in Charleroi with Magisterial District Judge Larry Hopkins, police were dispatched to Patterson Supply 11:44 a.m. Tuesday to check out two suspicious people on the property.

Behanna and Leasure tried to flee from the building, but were chased down by Officer William Fusco.

According to the affidavit, the suspects admitted to riding their bicycles to the property, knowing there was scrap metal on the site.

The suspects carried 12 large industrial drill bits, heavy metal sewer grates, a large crane wheel and a heavy metal blower, the affidavit stated.

They were arraigned by Hopkins and placed in the Washington County Correctional Facility, each in lieu of $35,000 bond.
