'American Coyotes' Series

The Mon Valley NAACP held its annual Human Rights Banquet Sunday at the Donora Borough Social Hall.

This year's theme was “Building Leadership; Leadership is not a Title; it's an Action.”

Donora native and U.S. District Court Judge Reggie B. Walton served as guest speaker.

Tim Stevens, former president of the Pittsburgh branch of the NAACP, served as the emcee.

The 2013 honorees were: Donora native David Hunter, vice president of business development, Financial Institutions at INVEST Financial; Monessen native Charel Allen, a professional basketball player; and Monessen native Marla Redwine, program manager and systems security engineer with Booz Allen Hamilton Inc.

This year's Outstanding African American Student award winners were: Tyler Yuille of Monessen High School, Community Service Award; Corri Waters, Elizabeth Forward High School, Academic Award; Brandon Bowman, Charleroi Area High School, Athletic Award; Elishia Lippincott, Monessen High School, Performing Arts Award.

Bishop Karl Jackson accepted the Merit Award for Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
