Seth Wright, a senior at Mt. Pleasant Area Junior-Senior High School, has earned a 2012-13 Western Pennsylvania Positive High School Athlete Award in the sport of boys' swimming from Positive Athlete Pittsburgh — an organization created by retired Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward.

“Getting the award is just a great honor for me,” Wright said. “I just try to approach each sport with a positive attitude and put in the work to be the best athlete I can be.”

The 2nd Annual Western Pennsylvania Positive High School Athlete Awards will take place at noon Saturday at the Sen. John Heinz History Center and Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum in Pittsburgh.

More than 450 nominations from over 100 high schools were received, according to the organization's website — The 26 individual sport winners — including Wright — will be recognized by Ward and other prominent city leaders, the site reads.

Sandy Felice, Wright's swim coach and the one who nominated him for the honor, was very excited about him winning this award, she said.

“When I got the email about nominating one of my athletes, Seth came to my mind immediately,” Felice said.

Seven traits were shared by those nominated for the awards — optimism, an encouraging demeanor, a willingness to serve and be a leader, possessing a heart for others, accountability, a willingness to give 100 percent effort and to put the team first.

Felice said Wright fit the bill.

“He has a good attitude about everything, and he takes everything in stride and sets goals. (He also) puts in the hard work to meet those goals and takes personal responsibility to push himself to be the best can be,” she said.

Wright said he feels honored to have been selected as the winner of such an award.

“I was in shock when Sandy first told me that I won,” Wright said.

In addition to an awards certificate signed by Ward, Wright will have the chance to have his photograph taken with him and to receive an autographed “Positive Athlete” dedication T-shirt.

Wright also competed in football at the school and he is a member of the varsity baseball team, as well.
