The Youngwood Volunteer Fire Department will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday

The event is designed to allow the public to see what department officials do while offering them an opportunity to become a part of the organization, said Chief Lloyd Crago.

“It would be great to recruit some new members to our fire department,” Crago said.

The department will feature informative displays and demonstrations, he said.

The event is the first of its kind for the department, according to Crago. Members hope to appeal to area residents interested in aiding the department and provide them with an informational tool.

“We received a lot of cooperation from Westmoreland County,” said John Storey Jr., a department fire engine captain. “We have the (county) sheriff's department and the county coroner coming.”

There will also be a presentation for the county courthouse's Reality Tour, which features real stories and scenarios from people affected by drugs and alcohol.

The open house will allow the public to personally examine the department's equipment and vehicles and to discover ways in which they can be a part of the organization.

“Not everyone wants to ride a fire truck and fight fires,” Storey said. “But there are many different ways that people can help us. They can help with administrative work or help with fund raising or (help) at the banquet hall or even help with the carnival. We have something for anyone who wants to help in our organization.”

The open house will also feature blood pressure and diabetes screening, an extrication demonstration and K-9 and rescue demonstrations.

There will also be bicycle helmet giveaways and informational displays from drug awareness groups.

PennDOT will be on hand to offer application forms for their Yellow DOT and Emergency Contact Information programs.

Light refreshments will be offered by the department's auxiliary unit.

“I would really like to see people know more about what we do in the Youngwood Fire Department,” Storey said. “If can get two more people to take applications and help with what we do, then this event will be a success.”

The department is located at 104 S. Second St. in the borough.
