Abbey Way once starred as a student/athlete at Mt. Pleasant Area Junior-Senior High School.

Five years after her 2008 graduation, Way still has the spotlight as a sports journalist.

“I wanted to go into journalism because I love hearing people's stories and sharing them with the world,” Way said.

Way is a reporter for 93.7 “The Fan” sports radio station.

She is also employed as a freelance reporter for FOX Sports, and she is aiding former Pittsburgh Steeler Josh Miller in gathering information for a book he is co-writing.

“It has been quite the experience, and I'm very thankful to my friends and family who have been supportive the whole way,” Way said.

Way's high school list of sports achievements is long and distinguished.

She is still the third-ranked all-time scorer in Lady Vikings basketball history with more than 1,400 points.

Way also earned four gold medals during WPIAL track championships — three for pole vaulting and one for high jump. By her senior year, she had cleared 11 feet, 6 inches as a pole vaulter and was named PIAA state champion.

“Sports have always been my passion, and I loved to pole vault,” Way said.

After graduating, Way set out for East Carolina University on an NCAA Division 1 track and field scholarship. While there, Way cleared 12 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault by her senior year and finished second at Conference USA championships.

In the classroom, she decided to study journalism.

In the summer of 2011, Abbey got the big break she was hoping for when she applied for and secured an internship with “The Fan.”

After graduating college a year later, station officials hired Way as a reporter/producer covering Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins, along with Pitt and Robert Morris sports, the Frozen Four and even professional boxing. Way is also employed as a freelance field stage manager for FOX Sports, a position in which she prepares Pirates players for interviews.

“I also tell the umpire when he can call for the first pitch,” she said.

Way's third job is with Miller, who is co-authoring on a book titled “Always a Home Game” with Shawn Allen that is scheduled for release in summer 2014.

On Aug. 19, Way began traveling to 100 Steeler bars throughout the country in 140 days starting to gather information for book.

Throughout the Steelers' season, she will appear on the Jumbotron at Heinz Field with reports from her travels as a host with Miller's crew.
