A Philadelphia man is accused of trying to kill a man with whom he had played pool at a Delmont bar.

Joseph M. Vangoethem, 31, of South Broad Street in Philadelphia, was jailed at the Westmoreland County Prison on charges of criminal attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery and escape. He is being held in lieu of $333,333 bond set by Export District Judge Charles Conway.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Delmont police, Vangoethem had been playing pool with James Weinstein of Delmont at Carneys Corner along Route 66 at about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the affidavit, police accuse Vangoethem of poking Weinstein with a pool cue after winning, punching him in the face twice and then hitting the man in the face after he fell to the ground. He is accused of then picking up a chair and throwing it at him, kicking the man in the head three times, taking money and other items from him, and leaving. Weinstein was taken to Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville for treatment.
