Paving along Logan Ferry to begin

Paving will begin along Logan Ferry Road in Murrysville this weekend.

Murrysville officials will pay $1.2 million to repave the portion of the road that the municipality took ownership of from the state earlier this year.

Paving will be completed by Tresco Paving of Plum. PennDOT paid the municipality $1.8 million to take responsibility for just under 3.7 miles of the road, stretching from the Plum line into the municipality.

Work will begin June 15 and is expected to take about two months, engineer Joe Dietrick said.

Twin Oaks still sliding

A landslide along Twin Oaks Drive still is unstable, Morrison said.

The slide, which occurred in April, has resulted in the closure of the road between Acorn Lane and Bridgewood Drive.

Morrison said a tree behind the guide rail along the road dropped straight down into the slide.

“It's still sliding downhill,” Morrison said.

When council members asked if there was anything under the road, Morrison said there likely is water.

Council President Joan Kearns said there are rumors of an underground river beneath the crumbling roadway.

Officials have discussed permanently closing the road and creating dual cul-de-sacs.

Bids sought for cardboard compactor

Murrysville officials are planning to install a dual-powered cardboard compactor as part of its recycling program.

The municipality received a $38,866 grant earlier this year from the state Department of Environmental Protection to buy the compactor. Under the terms of the grant application, the compactor will be run by solar power, with electrical backup, chief administrator Jim Morrison said. It will be located in the municipal-building parking lot on the same side of the building as the police station.

The municipality converted to automated recycling last year. The compactor will be available for public use by residents, Morrison said.
