Route 910 partially closing for bridge work
PennDOT plans to close part of Route 910 for five months next spring to replace two old bridges over a branch of Pine Creek, near Pearce Mill Road.
Motorists will need to find detours from mid-April to mid-September 2013 for the estimated $4 million project.
In addition to replacing the deteriorating spans, PennDOT will widen Route 910 — Wexford Road — to accommodate new turning lanes and turning signals at Pearce Mill Road.
“The bridges are structurally deficient,” said project manager Noreen Karolski of Buchart Horn, Inc., the engineering firm working with PennDOT on the project.
One bridge is 54 feet long. The other bridge is 18 feet long. PennDOT Project Manager John Zelesnak said both bridges were built in 1940. Both cross the North Fork of Pine Creek.
“They're in need of replacement,” he said, but neither is in danger of falling down.
PennDOT plans to replace the shorter bridge with an 18-foot box culvert under blacktop. To replace the longer span, PennDOT plans to build a new bridge with two new concrete abutments.
PennDOT also plans to plant 670 trees and shrubs beside the widened stretch of roadway.
“Due to the widening, we're affecting the wetlands,” said Karolski.
Engineers for forthcoming improvements displayed blueprints, and answered questions about the project, on Sept. 6 in Pine Community Center.
During the project, posted detour signs will direct motorists to and from Route 19 via Pearce Mill Road, Graham Road and Warrendale Road.
During the project, Route 910 will remain open between Route 8 in Richland and Pearce Mill Road in Pine.
Route 910 also will remain open between Route 19 and Lyndhurst Drive, located a short distance west of the entrance to New Community Church, 3100 Wexford Road.
“One bridge will be closed at a time, so we can maintain access to the New Community Church,” said Karolski.
During the closure, PennDOT will widen approximately 1,600 feet — less than a quarter-mile — of Route 910 from 26 to 40 feet.
“We're widening the road to accommodate three lanes and 4-foot shoulders,” Karolski said.

Zelesnak expects PennDOT to seek bids for the project in October, and select a contractor “by the end of the year, or early next year,” he said.
In April, Pine Township supervisors approved an agreement with PennDOT to pay for the project's new turning lanes and traffic signals — estimated to cost approximately $830,000 — at Route 910 and Pearce Mill Road. Pine plans to pay for the improvements with transportation impact fees collected for new developments in the township.
The township's 2012 budget allocates $1.2 million for improvements to the Route 910-Pearce Mill Road intersection.
