Millvale Community Library to host open mic night
Millvale Community Library is opening its doors to artists of all media with a new open mic program.
Millvale MASH, which stands for Musician, Artist and Storyteller Hub, is a collaboration between the Millvale Writers Group and the Brandt Street Press to offer an open mic night for artists of all genres at the Millvale Community Library once per month.
This month will be the Millvale MASH's second program, to be held on Oct. 13.
“Since it (the first Millvale MASH) was a success we decided to go for it and do another one,” said Lisa Seel, vice president of the board of trustees.
“I think there is a lot of hidden talent out there, and people who have a talent often want to share it and don't know how, and this is a laid back comfortable atmosphere … for people to share their talents.”
The idea for an open mic night stemmed out of the Millvale Writers Group, which meets from 7 to 8:30 p.m. every Thursday, and its writers who meet to share and critique each others' writings to give them a public outlet to share their work.
The library partnered with Brandt Street Press, a Squirrel Hill-based publisher that recently published a collection of short stories by local authors, to have one local author feature his or her work at each Millvale MASH. This month, Douglas Gwilym will be the featured speaker.
Adam Dove, who facilitates the Millvale Writers Group, said the open mic nights are “low key” and encouraging to the artists and writers who share their work.
“Each new person who got up gained confidence from the person before them,” Dove said.
The library staff said they will continue to host the Millvale MASH nights as long as there are artists and writers who want to share their work.
“What the community needs is arts,” Dove said. “What makes a community able to support itself is economics and sustainability. What makes a community a great place to live is the arts.”
