Sinkhole repair set for next week

Irwin officials hope to get a sinkhole on Third Street, near Main Street, repaired next week.
After declaring it an emergency project, council planned to award bids for the project during its voting meeting last night, according to engineer Lucien Bove.
“This is going to have to be an emergency repair,” he said. “It's not a large sinkhole, but when we found it, it was about as big around as a grown man's fist.”
Bove said officials first noticed the hole in September, which formed after a storm sewer line ruptured 12 feet under the street. He estimates the repair could cost about $18,400.
The hole has gotten larger since crews began exploring the area, to make sure more of the area wasn't affected by the ruptured line, Bove said.
“We didn't see any further damages, but we have to keep looking around,” Bove said. “We don't know why the line collapsed.”
Currently, the hole is covered by a steel plate, which makes it safe for traffic, Bove said.
Bove said he expects repairs to begin next week.
