Nonprofits' time of need not always just around holidays

December, and the end of the year in general, is a good time for nonprofits and charity organizations, with residents looking to make end-of-year tax-deductible donations and spreading the good will of the holiday season.
But once the tinsel is down and the trees are recycled, the nonprofits remain, seeking funding to help them continue their missions through the rest of the year.
In the fourth and final installment of our “Season of Giving” series, the Penn Hills Progress spoke with several local nonprofits to find out what time of year they are looking to boost their donations and funding.
Penn Hills Library Foundation
Mission: Providing capital for the enhancement of the William E. Anderson Library of Penn Hills.

Time of need: “We accept donations all year through. People do take advantage of the fact that they can make a tax-deductible donation at the end of the year. We've done several projects, which have helped enhance the library and our service to the public. We used foundation money to install handicapped parking and a railing to come down into the library,” said ex officio member Jean Kanouff.
Mission: To send equipment, care packages, and supplies to military personnel stationed overseas.

Time of need: “The holidays bring in our most substantial number of donations, because unfortunately that's the only time a lot of people remember there are soldiers overseas. The money we bring in from October to December covers us through January and February. When we really start hurting is March and April,” said director Summer Tissue.
Solid Rock Foundation International Outreach
Mission: To work with families and to teach, train and support them spiritually and physically and meet their needs. We have Bible study and we also have Christian child care, working with families on parenting and home skills.
Time of need: “December, because of the holidays, is a good month, but starting with the first of the year, we begin our new programs, as far as what families need. After the holidays, people seem to forget, so that's when we really need to be there for support and help,” said board member Oliver Harper.
Riverview Children's Center
Mission: To provide childcare services, nursery school and pre-kindergarten programs, along with afterschool and summer programs for school-age children.
Time of need: “As a nonprofit, donations come in a variety of ways and we're grateful for all of them. Each source of support really helps to strengthen the organization. We usually do a year-end appeal in the form of a mailer, and our board of directors usually holds a special event in the spring. But there are ways community members and businesses can support us, which is through the pre-kindergarten tax credit program. An application goes to the state, and if it's approved, they can direct a portion or all of their state sales tax to our scholarship organization. We've also partnered with Shady Lane School in Braddock to form a scholarship organization,” said executive director Betty Lisowski.
