Four from Penn-Trafford, one from Franklin Regional reach WPIAL girls golf final
Penn-Trafford is the runaway leader of Section 3-AAA girls golf, and the reason why was on display last week.
Four Warriors qualified for the WPIAL individual tournament with their performances at the sectional qualifier at Saxon Golf Course last Thursday, while no other school had more than one player advance.
Senior Haley Borkovich was the medalist in the qualifier with a 4-over-par round of 76, while teammates Mia Barchetti (84), Casey Doran (86) and Morgan Rector (88) all shot below the target score of 91. That gives P-T four of the 28 entrants for the WPIAL final, 9 a.m. Monday at 3 Lakes Golf Course, and opens the potential two teammates could be paired as Borkovich and Barchetti were at Saxon.
“I went 3-over on my last two holes, but I'm happy with my round,” Borkovich said. “I'm very excited that my teammates are going to be (at WPIALs). I really liked playing with one of mine today.”
Franklin Regional senior Alex Schwab will represent the Panthers at WPIALs after she qualified with a round of 85. No other Star coverage area golfers qualified, while Hempfield's Janista Numpho-Frank, who played in the Section 1-AAA qualifier, is the only other Westmoreland County golfer to reach the girls final.
Although the Penn-Trafford golfers have made it clear that capturing the WPIAL team title that has eluded them is their biggest goal this season, Borkovich said the chance to claim an individual title also is on their minds.
“(The individual tournament) is very important for me because it determines my own future,” Borkovich said. “But I always will be there for me teammates, and always try my best for them in (team) matches.”
Eleven girls from the Section 3-AAA qualifier shot below the target score. Qualifying in addition to the P-T players and Schwab were Shannon Gramley of Shady Side Academy (77), Johnna Beehner of Gateway (83), Alexa Strong of Indiana (86), Ashley DeMoss of Fox Chapel (87), Samantha Schumacher of Plum (88) and Marissa Balish of Hampton (90).
Penn-Trafford nearly sent five to WPIALs, but junior Royse Bachtel fell one stroke short of the target with a 92. Franklin Regional senior Breanna Molinaro was the next closest player from FR with a 96.
Also competing from the Star coverage area were Franklin Regional golfers Brenna Scott (101), Livia Molinaro (102) and Jordan Woyt (107). Norwin sent only two of its maximum five golfers, Rachel DelBene (111) and Taylor Churchfield (116), to the qualifier.
