Carothers prepares to ‘Bring It On’ on Broadway

Three years after last wearing the uniform of a Penn-Trafford cheerleader, Lindsey Carothers will be cheering in front of a crowd again.
This time, it will be a Broadway audience.
Carothers, a 2009 Penn-Trafford graduate, is a member of the ensemble for “Bring It On: The Musical,” a comedy about cheerleader competitions. She will make her debut in the show at St. James Theatre on Tuesday and dance at times as a member of the rival cheer squads from Truman and Jackson high schools.
Carothers, 21, learned in early November that she would a part of the show for its final three weeks on Broadway until its run concludes on Dec. 30. She was on the national tour earlier this year and performed during April shows in Providence, Rhode Island.
She has been preparing for her part by rehearsing about five hours a day, then watching the nightly performances.
“I couldn't ask for anything more for Christmas,” said Carothers, who is on track to graduate from Pace University in New York with a musical-theater degree in May.
“This is the best Christmas present I could ask for.”
Carothers, a former high-school cheerleader who grew up in Penn Township, didn't join any theater productions at Penn-Trafford until her junior year. She said she quickly developed a passion for the stage.
At Penn-Trafford, she appeared in “Seussical” and “Anything Goes.”
She initially enrolled at American University in Washington, D.C., but transferred to Pace to pursue the myriad performing opportunities in “The Big Apple.”
“It just felt right, so I never hesitated to follow it,” Carothers said of getting the bug to perform.
“I've never loved anything as much as I love this.”
Carothers stopped over at her alma mater on Nov. 24 to meet with cast members for “The Hobbit,” the fall show at Penn-Trafford. She said Bev Rubright, the chairwoman of the high school's music department, and Tom Bekavac, who directs the high school productions, helped to set her on her career path.
“I give them so much credit because they're the ones that gave me the chance to find this.”
