Brian Ellicker is withdrawing from the Trafford Council race, but his name will remain on the Nov. 5 ballot.

Ellicker's withdrawal leaves five candidates who plan to campaign for the four open four-year seats.

Ellicker, who won a Republican nomination in May, said in a statement Tuesday that he will not campaign because of health issues. The deadline for candidates nominated in the primary to withdraw was Aug. 12.

Ellicker suggested that voters consider choosing “those with new ideas and new blood before you re-elect those in power.”

“This local government, in my humble opinion, is broken,” he said in the statement.

The nominated candidates in the race are incumbents Rich Laird, Casey Shoub, Henry Schultz and Jay Race and newcomer Peter J. Ledwich.
