Park-and-ride lot at Holiday Park to close through April
The Port Authority park-and-ride lot at the Holiday Park Volunteer Fire Department will be off limits for several months.
The lot, with about 110 spaces and owned by the fire department on Route 286 in Plum, has closed for two purposes — the annual Christmas-tree sale and an expansion project of the fire station.
“It will be shut down for park-n-ride customers,” said Bob Webb, chairman of the board of directors of the Holiday Park Volunteer Fire Department.
“It is scheduled to be closed the entire time during the 150 days of construction through April 2013. We don't want damage to anyone's car and to pedestrians.”
The lot serves the P12 Holiday Park Flyer bus route. Motorists who are interested in considering other lots should go to the park-and-ride page on the Port Authority website: www.portauthority.org/paac/RiderServices.
Fire Chief Larry Glass said the two-story, 5,500-square-foot addition will include two additional bays for vehicles, offices, sleeping quarters, a training room, kitchen and storage room.
Webb said the department has outgrown the current facility.
“We have a lot of volunteers, and we need more room,” Webb said. “We have no space for the gear.”
Holiday Park has about 30 active volunteers, Glass has said.
Also, the department's recently purchased Kubota all-terrain vehicle currently stays outside because there is no space in the garage. And the department's new ladder truck fits in the garage, “but it is tight,” Webb said.
The start of construction is expected to be determined within a couple of weeks, Webb said. Kacin General Contractors in Murrysville has been hired to do the work.
Thursday night bingo at the fire hall will continue throughout the construction, Webb said.
Some parking spots for bingo players are available in the back of the Nowalk Daily Grind, Webb said.
“We have promised Port Authority we will get the lot opened as soon as we can,” Webb said. “We may open it in stages. The progress of the project will dictate it.”
