Trip to Nickers and Neighs provides exercise, relaxation for Southmoreland Primary Center students

The Geyer Performing Arts Center will come alive this weekend with one of the first performances in the area of “Legally Blonde,” the Musical, which was just recently released for amateur performance.

Director Tricia Rohlf, who is no stranger to the show since she directed it for Brownsville High School earlier this year, is excited about the performances.

“There is a lot of excitement surrounding it from the younger generation because it is so new,” she said. Because I had just done it at Brownsville High School, I pitched it to (theater manager) Kristen (Tunney), because I thought the Geyer should be the first local theater to produce this show.”

Rohlf then offered all the sets and costumes from Brownsville High School, so the costs would be at a minimum. The show was then approved by the GPAC board.

Based on the movie where Reese Witherspoon embodied the fraternity girl turned lawyer Elle Woods, Rohlf said the show is about “Girl Power.”

“Though it might seem like a ‘fluff' show at first, the message is really this - being true to yourself never goes out of style,” she said.

Preparing of the show has been a bit of a challenge just trying to get all of the actors to practices at the same time.

“For this show, I have a cast from all over the state, including six cast members who are musical theatre majors from Point Park in Pittsburgh and one cast member who travels in from University Park on the weekends,” Rohlf said. “My leads are truly awesome, college-theater trained actors.

“This has been an amazing experience for my high school cast,” she added. “They have gotten to work with and talk to cast members who are planning on making a career out of theater.”

The lead role will be played by Lexie Rohlf, the daughter of Tricia Rohlf, who embodies the character of Elle Woods. Tricia Rohlf will also have two dogs in the production, including Sadie who will be playing Bruiser and a rescue dog named Pippin who will be playing Rufus.

A dinner-theater option is available for $25 during the show that takes place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Without the dinner theater option, tickets are $12 apiece.
