Coin-operated meters return to Sewickley parking lot
Grab the quarters.
Traditional parking meters have returned in Sewickley's Green Street public lot.
After several months of issues with a parking pay station that resulted in many weeks of free parking, users of the roughly 50 spots must again pay for parking — and only with quarters.
Borough workers last week reinstalled the meters that had been in storage since a pay station was placed in the lot about four years ago, Manager Kevin Flannery said.
“We're going back to meters temporarily until we figure out what to do,” he said. “I don't want to lose anymore revenue.”
Flannery wasn't sure how long until a permanent solution would be in place. He said council members and borough staff would meet in the coming months for an annual review of the budget and could make a decision then about how to proceed.
“Some council members want meters, others want all new machines everywhere,” he said.
In addition, borough leaders also are exploring the possibility of constructing a parking garage at the Green Street lot and on adjacent property they could purchase soon, he said.
A parking pay station in the Division Street lot also has plagued the borough with issues since around February. Flannery said the pay station there — which serves about 50 parking spots — had been accepting both credit/debit cards and coins for several days.
But on Friday, the machine again only was accepting coins. Flannery was unsure of the machine's current issue.
Through May, parking revenue across the borough is about on par from last year, Flannery said.
Still, Flannery said, the loss of revenue — and inability to gain revenue — is worrisome.
Borough leaders approved the meters in 2009 in an effort to allow visitors to the business district options for paying to park, Flannery said.
The borough has had on-again, off-again issues with the two pay stations over the years, he said.
Flannery said he was disappointed with Duncan Solutions — the Wisconsin-based company the borough purchased the pay stations from in 2009.
“So it's time to move on (and) go somewhere else with the service,” he said.
A Duncan spokesman could not be reached for comment by deadline.
“We're not going to keep thinking they'll fix it,” Flannery said. “We'll put the meters back on.”
