They're back! Parking meters return to Sewickley lot

The meters are back.
Coin-operated meters in Sewickley's Division Street parking lot were installed Tuesday morning after nearly a four-year hiatus.
Public Works employees had the roughly 50-space public lot closed as the meters were being added.
The meters replaced a single pay station that allowed drivers to use coins, dollar bills or credit/debit cards to pay for time.
The return of coin-operated meters ends a nearly seven-month issue with the borough's parking lot revenue.
In the Green Street lot, the pay station was removed over the summer and replaced with traditional parking meter machines at the front of each spot.
In February, problems with the Division Street pay station began when $5 in coins were found jammed into the machine's credit card slot.
Woes continued when the Green Street lot began malfunctioning weeks after the Division Street lot issues began.
Along with coins found in one machine, computer glitches were discovered, prompting replacement pieces to be installed.
From January through July, about $91,404 in parking meter revenue was collected, according to borough documents. Meter revenue totals include all public parking spaces in the borough.
During the same time period in 2012, the borough collected $106,308.
The borough's biggest dip came in June when about $5,695 was collected, documents show.
In May, officials collected about $8,600 more than the same month the previous year.
The pay stations — purchased from Duncan Solutions, Inc. — were installed in 2009.
Borough Manager Kevin Flannery said officials were working to have the company help foot some of the bill for lost revenue.
A spokesman with Duncan could not be reached for comment.
Borough staff and council members have considered moving to another company for parking pay stations, Flannery said.
The last seven months aren't the first time issues plagued the two pay stations. Borough officials have had on-again, off-again issues — blamed mostly on weather and technology — with the pay stations since they were installed.
