Organizers of the fourth annual Sewickley Wine Walk are urging people to purchase tickets in advance, because a limit of 750 participants has been set.
The Nov. 6 event will be the biggest ever with more participants and more wine, organizers say, and they have determined 750 people is the maximum businesses can handle after last year's event drew 710.
A collaboration between Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce and Village Green Partners, the Wine Walk will feature 36 businesses. Heritage Valley Health System is the sponsor.
Each business will be assigned a different wine for patrons to taste except for Vivo Kitchen, which will serve a wine offered in the Beaver Street restaurant.
Alexis Comunale, a Sewickley Valley Chamber of Commerce board member and owner of Jewel Thief in Sewickley, said she worked with Marcia Stepek, a wine specialist at the Wine & Spirits Store in Sewickley, to choose the wines. Many of the wines will feature new blends of various grapes, and all will be on the dry side.
Comunale said Wine & Spirits in Sewickley will try to have all the featured wines available for purchase that night.
But before participants can taste, they must register at Wine Central, to be set up this year in a tent on Locust Street.
At registration, participants will receive wrist bands and two cards. One card will list all of the stores, and have space for owners or workers to sign when walkers visit. The other will feature a map and list of the wines and businesses, so that walkers can keep track of the wines they like.
A raffle will be held again this year. At 9 p.m., two names will be drawn, each winning half of the 36 wines served that evening. Each business will donate a bottle for the raffle.
Winners do not have to be present to win but all those who enter the raffle must return to Wine Central to drop off their cards. The cards must have a minimum 25 signatures, including mandatory stores Yankello's Video & Audio, at Washington and Chestnut streets; Tournesol, 424 Walnut; Valerie M., 519 Broad St.; and Cuttings, 524 Locust Place.
Comunale said the four businesses were chosen in an attempt to get walkers to visit all corners of the Village.
She said the event is a boost for the businesses, especially newer stores because it draws people into shops they may not have visited before.
Frank Yankello, part owner of Yankello's with his brother Mike, said the event always exposes the store to new customers and brings in previous ones.
