Baldwin game to be televised by Root Sports
The Baldwin Fighting Highlanders will be part of the Root Sports football broadcast lineup during the 2012 season.
Root Sports is televising high school football games on Thursday nights this year, starting with the Montour-Central Valley matchup in the Parkway Conference on Sept. 6.
The following week, on Sept. 13, Root Sports will televise the Baldwin-Penn Hills conference game at 7 p.m.
“We're excited about the recognition that the program and school district will get. It's awesome for the kids,” said Jim Wehner, the Fighting Highlanders' head coach. “Root Sports does a great job with the broadcast.”
Baldwin and Penn Hills are members of the Quad Central Conference, along with Bethel Park, Canon-McMillan, Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township, Plum, Upper St. Clair and Woodland Hills.
The Fighting Highlanders will have two games under their belts before playing in the televised contest.
The local squad kicks off its 2012 season Friday at Peters Township, followed by its home opener Sept. 7 versus Plum.
Both are conference matchups.
Penn Hills opens at Canon-McMillan on Friday, then hosts Peters Township on Sept. 7.
Rob King and Craig Wolfley will provide the play-by-play and color commentary for the Root Sports high school football games.
“We try to focus on finding the best games without doubling up schools,” said Craig McConnell, Root Sports high school football coodinating producer.
“The idea was to focus on neighborhood rivalries between the top programs in Western Pennsylvania. We think we've done that.”
Baldwin will play in two other games with 7 p.m. starting times. Both are on the road — at Fox Chapel (Oct. 12) in a nonconference matchup, and at Canon-McMillan (Oct. 19) in a conference test.
