Library program to feature talks by local veterans

It's a chance to experience what it was like for soldiers and their families during World War II, inspect artifacts from the time and hear firsthand stories from those who served their country in the second World War.
Baldwin Borough Public Library will host “Remembering World War II” on Saturday, from 1 to 3:30 p.m., at the Baldwin Borough municipal building, 3344 Churchview Ave.
The free program will include talks by local veterans, viewing of “A Testament to Freedom,” and examination of memorabilia.
The purpose of the event is twofold, library director Joyce Chiappetta said.
“It's to give tribute and honor to our veterans and for people in the audience to learn about not just the facts and dates, but the actual experiences of people (from World War II).”
The library introduced the program last year and had “such an emotional” response that staffers decided to repeat it this year, Chiappetta said.
“It just made it so much more real,” she said.
The program is geared for “anybody and everybody,” from people wanting to learn more about history and World War II, to those who served and want to share their stories with others.
The program also is ideal for parents to bring their children “in hopes of inspiring” them “to learn that freedom isn't free” and “that anything worth having you have to work for,” Chiappetta said. “These people are great examples of that.”
