West Jefferson Hills School District names new superintendent

Monday, April 29, 2013, 11:03 a.m.

West Jefferson Hills School Board hired the district's first full-time superintendent in more than three years Monday night.

Board members voted unanimously to hire Michael A. Panza as superintendent for a term of five years, from July 1, through June 30, 2018. Panza will earn an annual salary of $150,000.

Panza, 55, lives in northern Butler County. He has been superintendent at Sto-Rox for the past two years and prior to that was superintendent at Carlynton.

West Jefferson Hills has had several interim and acting superintendents since suspending Terry Kinavey in September 2009.

Kinavey's suspension came after more than 100 residents attended board meetings questioning her actions to remove longterm substitute Denise Breisinger's name from a hiring sheet.

The board voted to fire Kinavey in September 2010, following testimony and a termination hearing that lasted 15 sessions in which district officials presented evidence that she violated district procedures as well as plagiarized materials and speeches.

Breisinger later was hired for a teaching position at Thomas Jefferson, the same day Kinavey was placed on administrative leave.

Kinavey appealed her termination and has been in several ongoing legal battles with the district and board members.
