Man dies in Bullskin Township crash
A Connellsville man died while behind the wheel of his pickup truck yesterday in Bullskin Township.
Fayette County Coroner Dr. Phillip Reilly said that Norman E. Schurg, 65, of Connellsville was pronounced dead at the Highlands Hospital emergency room.
The vehicle's passenger, Kathleen R. Schurg, 63, of Connellsville was transported to UPMC Presby in Pittsburgh for injuries sustained in the crash.
State police at Uniontown said that Norman Schurg was driving the Chevrolet S-10 north on Route 119 when it drove off the east edge of the road. The truck traveled through a yard at 2115 Buttermore Blvd. and then struck several bushes before going down an embankment, coming to rest in a creek at 2:05 p.m.
Reilly said he believes Norman Schurg suffered a cardiac event while driving the vehicle. Reilly said he saw no trauma-related injuries that could cause a fatality. The driver was wearing a seat belt and Kathleen Schurg said to the first responders that he was slumped over the wheel.
Because of that information as well as his age, Reilly said there will not be an autopsy performed. A standard toxicology test is being conducted, but Reilly said he doesn't believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.
Traffic on Route 119 near Marion Motors was slowed for several hours on Thursday as state police investigated the collision.
