A worker at Lehigh Specialty Melting Inc. in Latrobe was injured in a explosion Thursday night when molten metal came into contact with water at the plant, Latrobe's fire chief said.

The worker, whose name was not released, suffered some burns from the incident at 8 p.m.

The victim was taken from the scene by Mutual Aid Ambulance Service, according to city fire Chief John Brasile, however, Excela Health spokeswoman Jen Miele said he was not treated at Excela Latrobe hospital.

The accident did not cause a fire at the plant, but it created a sound similar to a sonic boom, Brasile said.

Production at the plant was not halted, Brasile said.

A spokesperson for Lehigh Specialty Melting could not be reached for comment Thursday night. According to the company's website, it specializes in melting carbon and low alloy steel ingots for a variety of applications.
