'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. Most are Americans working for money and/or drugs. This series reports how their operations have a major impact on life for residents and the environment along the border — and beyond.

A Trafford man who was shot in Jeannette early Saturday remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday.

Victor Bailey, 28, was shot in the back as he stood on the steps at 604 Division St. at 3:30 a.m., police Chief Brad Shepler said.

He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. A hospital spokeswoman said Bailey was listed in critical condition Tuesday.

Shepler said it was unclear if the shooter was on foot or fired from a passing vehicle.

No charges were filed as of Tuesday, Shepler said.
