A man accused of killing a former East Allegheny football player wrote that he was about to “smoke cuz” in a text message the night of the fatal shooting, Allegheny County Police said in an arrest warrant filed Friday.

Police charged Dewayne Gray, 20, of West Mifflin with homicide in connection with the Aug. 12 death of Charles Davis, 18, whose body was found in the driveway of a home in the 600 block of Mehaffey Street in Duquesne.

Detectives learned Davis was at a party with friends in the hours before the shooting. He went with Gray in a Chevrolet Cruze to buy marijuana, police said. Duquesne police responding to a report of gunfire spotted the car and a man running from it, police said.

County police arrested Gray on Aug. 13 and charged him with possession with intent to deliver. Detectives found a message on his cell phone from 12:15 a.m. the day of the shooting that said “cuz make sure ya people got dat $$$ im bout to smoke cuz.” He was released from jail on that charge and police were searching for him Friday on the homicide charge.
