Residents who participate in Canonsburg's long-standing tradition of lining up chairs to reserve prime spots for the annual Fourth of July parade have a little more time to stake their claim.

Borough council on Monday voted 6-3 to allow residents to begin lining up chairs along Pike Street at 6 a.m., 48 hours prior to the parade.

In past years, residents began marking their territory as soon as early June by roping off half-block-long sections of the street or chaining chairs to trees and sign posts.

The vote reverses a July decision in which concerns over safety and liability prompted council to prohibit chairs before 6 a.m. on the day of the parade.

Councilmen Tim Bilsky, Joseph Graff Sr. and Paul Sharkady voted against the change on Monday.
