A Hempfield woman was arraigned Wednesday on charges that she punched and kicked a Greensburg police officer in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital.

Angela Adele Zontek, 22, of 375 Fosterville Road faces a preliminary hearing Oct. 18 before Greensburg District Judge James Albert on three counts each of aggravated assault and recklessly endangering another person; two counts of driving under the influence; and one count each of hit-and-run and reckless driving.

Police charged her with the three aggravated assault counts for two punches that she allegedly threw at the face of Patrolman John Carnes and a kick to his lower stomach Wednesday morning in the hospital, according to court papers.

Police filed the three reckless-endangerment offenses on behalf of driver Phyllis McGrew and passengers Thomas Ross and Crystal Fole. Zontek nearly struck their car a few times about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday on Harvey Avenue before eventually hitting them and causing slight bumper damage, police said.

McGrew, fearing for her safety, said she pulled to the side of the road to try avoiding Zontek, but Zontek's 2008 Pontiac Vibe struck her Nissan Versa. Zontek drove off and eventually was stopped by police, authorities said.

In the Greensburg hospital, Zontek began yelling obscenities at the admission desk, police said. She asked about her purse, which police said they told her they had secured in a patrol car and would return to her later. Zontek then resisted going to an examination room, police said. In the examination room, she assaulted Carnes, authorities said.

Hospital personnel drew blood from Zontek.

She was jailed in lieu of posting $5,000 bond.
