A Penn Hills boy was in serious condition at a hospital Saturday night after he was hit by a car while trick-or-treating in Edgewood, police said.
The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. near the corner of Linden and Maple avenues near Edgewood Primary School.
Edgewood Police Chief Robert Payne said the boy suffered a severe head wound when he was hit while crossing the street. He was taken to Childrens Hospital in Lawrenceville. No one else was injured.
Delisha Thomas, 32, of Hazelwood said she saw the car hit the boy, believed to be 4 or 5 years old, as he walked with a bag of candy.
"She was going a speed that she shouldn't have been going," Thomas said of the driver.
Payne said police will investigate whether speed was a factor in the incident.
"I was scared because it could have been my child," Thomas said. "I feel for the grandmother and mother."
She said the street was dark at the time and full of trick-or-treating children.
Payne said the boy was wearing a dark costume. Some witnesses thought he was dressed as a ninja. Payne said the driver, a 26-year-old woman from Edgewood, stopped immediately after the incident.
The boy was with his grandmother. She took him to a nearby home where a nurse who lives in the area treated him until paramedics arrived.
Payne said police are deciding whether to file charges, and will test the driver - whom he declined to identify - for drugs and alcohol.
Many Pittsburgh-area communities, including Edgewood, rescheduled the designated night for Halloween trick-or-treating to Saturday because of the storms that swept through the area mid-week as a result of superstorm Sandy.
