Penn-Trafford school directors on Monday approved borrowing $9.5 million for renovations at the high school.

It's the first step in what Superintendent Thomas Butler described as a $30 million project at the school.

The district is beginning the design process and additional borrowing could be necessary in the coming years, he said.

Butler hopes to present a plan to the public during the summer and have a final design ready in the fall of 2013.

The high school's aging infrastructure — including piping and wiring — is in need of replacement.

The building was constructed in 1972 and renovated in 1996.

“We have to take care of the nuts and bolts of this building,” Butler said.

In addition, he envisions a cutting-edge building with flexible spaces for multiple uses. Beefing up science labs will be one of Butler's “must-haves.”

The board did not discuss the measure before voting unanimously.

“The board feels strongly that this building needs to be addressed,” Butler said earlier in the meeting.

No specific plans are in place for renovations at the high school or any other district building.
