HARMONY, N.Y. — Authorities say a Butler man found dead in the western New York woods apparently was killed when his tree stand gave way while he was hunting.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office tells local media outlets that a friend of 68-year-old Allen “Randy” Smith called police Tuesday afternoon to report that he hadn't returned from hunting in the town of Harmony, on the Pennsylvania border 65 miles southwest of Buffalo.

Deputies and members of other law enforcement agencies searched the woods for three hours before finding Smith at the bottom of a tree. Authorities say it appears something broke on Smith's tree stand, causing him to fall about 20 feet to his death.
