Kittanning prepares to ring in Christmas season on Friday
KITTANNING – Thanksgiving is still a week away, but Christmas seems to be foremost on the minds of many downtown Kittanning business owners.
That's because Friday is Light Up Night, and local organizations and businesses are preparing for the night's events by decorating their windows with a Christmas vacation theme.
The beauty salon, Tan Yer Hide, 107 N. Jefferson St., was last year's winner of the window decorating contest. And this year, the salon owners think their chances are good for another win.
“We get really excited about decorating,” said co-owner Tina Mechling. “Some of our clients help us with ideas and have donated items.”
A green, custom Softail motorcycle serves as a backdrop to the beachy window scene. Mechling said a tanned, dressed-down Santa will be sitting in the window area on Friday evening wearing a summer shirt and Bermuda shorts.
The salon will sell walking tacos and will be offering nail art during Light Up Night. Proceeds will go to HAVIN to assist a family with Christmas, said Mechling.
At the end of the block and across the street, another salon has been preparing for Friday's event.
Bryan Blose, manager of Head To Toe, 124 market St., was busy earlier in the week decorating the salon window with a ski vacation theme. He said it had been more difficult to get into the Christmas decorating spirit this year because it was so unseasonably warm on the day he trimmed the tree for the display.
But the salon will be serving up plenty of Christmas spirit with homemade apple dumplings on Friday.
Blose said his mother and owner of the salon, Marie Blose, has been busy making the dumplings and plans to have 100 to sell at $4 per dumpling. Marie Blose along with her father, sister and two brothers have been hard at work this week turning out generous-sized dumplings using their family recipe.
All the proceeds from the apple dumplings will be split between HAVIN and Armstrong County Community Action, said Bryan Blose. The salon will be taking dumpling orders during Light-Up Night for pick-up on Tuesday.
