Pittsburgh police arrested a woman accused of attempting to suffocate her child.

Police in October charged Rachel Nelson, 22, of Costa, W.VA. with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person.

Police believe Nelson tried to smother her 4-month-old son twice while he was being treated at Children's Hospital in Lawrenceville. She was under evaluation at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic after she admitted to police she would hold the boy against her chest and squeeze him tighter when he struggled to breath, police said.

She was arraigned on the charges early Thursday and was being held at the Allegheny County Jail in lieu of a $100,000 bail, according to court records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
