'American Coyotes' Series

Traveling by Jeep, boat and foot, Tribune-Review investigative reporter Carl Prine and photojournalist Justin Merriman covered nearly 2,000 miles over two months along the border with Mexico to report on coyotes — the human traffickers who bring illegal immigrants into the United States. A Slippery Rock man was killed Sunday when he took an exit ramp too fast and was thrown from his motorcycle, state police said.

Thomas L. Shaffer, 49, was traveling east on State Route 422 in Muddy Creek and took the off-ramp for Route 19, but lost control of the 2007 Suzuki GSX motorcycle and struck the embankment about 6 p.m., police said.

Shaffer was thrown from the motorcycle and died at the scene. He was wearing his helmet at the time, police said.
