An 18-year-old Charleroi Area High School student was charged Tuesday for allegedly having a pipe bomb in his car while it was parked on school property earlier this month.

Ryan Pfrogner, 18, of 136 River Ave., Speers, was charged by Charleroi Area School District police with risking a catastrophe, prohibited offensive weapons and possession of a weapon on school property.

The charges, filed with Charleroi District Judge Larry Hopkins, will be sent to Pfrogner via mail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 3.

School district officials learned of the pipe bomb when they investigated claims by parents that Pfrogner, an honors student, had made a bomb in chemistry class.

That claim was found to be false, but Pfrogner admitted to school officials on Nov. 20 that he had a pipe bomb in the trunk of his car while it was parked on school property the week before.

The Allegheny County Bomb Squad was called to Pfrogner's home that day and discovered at least three plastic pipe bombs.

Charges related to the bombs found at the house have not been filed.
