A former Beaver County borough councilman awaiting trial on charges of killing his lover more than 30 years ago was released from jail on Tuesday to await trial.

Gregory Scott Hopkins, 66, a former Bridgewater councilman, had been jailed since January when he was charged with homicide when DNA evidence linked him to the slaying of Catherine Janet Walsh, 23, of Monaca. Her father found her in bed, bound and strangled with a bandana. Hopkins has said he is innocent.

A judge granted bail on Monday after defense attorney James Ross successfully argued that Hopkins' trial — which was scheduled to begin last week — could be delayed another year because the district attorney's office has filed an appeal with state Superior Court. The appeal was filed after Judge Harry E. Knafelc ruled prosecutors could not use an expert witness they wanted.

State court records show that bail was posted Tuesday.
