Top 2 editors at Pittsburgh Trib announce retirement
Longtime Tribune-Review Editor Frank Craig has announced his retirement, Trib Total Media President and CEO Jennifer Bertetto said Monday.
In a memo to employees, Bertetto said Craig, 62, would step down immediately. Managing Editor Jim Cuddy, 61, also announced his retirement, she said.
“I am grateful to both Frank and Jim for their passion and commitment to exceptional journalism — something we will continue to pursue into the future,” Bertetto said in the memo.
Bertetto said Luis Fábregas, the paper's deputy managing editor, will take over as editor of the Tribune-Review's Pittsburgh edition. Sue McFarland, editor of the Tribune-Review's Westmoreland edition, will continue to lead that newsroom and will manage the Tribune-Review's Valley News Dispatch edition in Tarentum.
“Sue and Luis bring decades of newspaper experience to help the Trib continue to navigate the fast-changing media landscape,” Bertetto said in the memo to employees. “They're both dedicated, long-serving members of our team who understand the value of journalism.”
Fábregas, 49, joined the Trib in 1997 and worked for more than a decade as an investigative reporter and medical editor. McFarland, 58, has worked for the company for 35 years and has held numerous editing roles.
Following Publisher Dick Scaife's death in 2014, Trib Total Media sold several of its newspapers and began to restructure its operations. The company offered buyouts in 2015 that 68 employees accepted.
“Our company is moving into a new phase, one that I hope responds creatively and successfully to the intense pressures facing every newspaper,” Craig said.
He became the Trib's editor in 2000. He was previously an assistant managing editor at The Blade in Toledo, Ohio.
Craig praised the newsroom staff he led for nearly 17 years, saying it was “an incredible honor” to work with “the best journalists I have ever known.” He called working at the Trib “one of the great pleasures of my life.”
Cuddy, whose career included more than a decade at The Pittsburgh Press, joined the Trib in 1993. He became managing editor in 2011.
