MONROEVILLE -- The Monroeville Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to table a vote on Highmark's site plan for an ambulatory surgery center proposed for Monroeville Boulevard.

Officials from Highmark, who requested the delay, did not speak at the meeting.

The Downtown-based insurance company has insisted that the request for the delay is not related to its legal battle with West Penn Allegheny Health System, but was a result of needing more time to provide Monroeville officials with the necessary documents with design changes.

West Penn Allegheny and Highmark reached a deal last year for the insurance company to buy the troubled hospital system for $475 million. West Penn dissolved that deal two weeks ago, claiming that Highmark violated the agreement by demanding that West Penn file bankruptcy to restructure about $1 billion in debt.
